THE ALPACA VET Camelid Drug Formulary for Owners
No medicines are licensed for use in camelids, so you won't find a dose for your alpaca or llama written on the label. In this document, medicines are listed by category (antibiotics, wormers and anticoccidials, and other medicines). Doses are provided so that you can make sure your animals are prescribed the correct dose. There are also important notes about the medicines to help you understand when to use or when to avoid. Many of the medicines listed are prescription only medications so will require your veterinarian to prescribe them. Print this off and keep it handy to show your veterinarian in case they need to know a dose because no medicines are licensed for use in camelids.
I have also listed some trade names alongside the products. In some cases, the same trade names are used in different countries. In others, there are different names for products - eg US vs UK. These are specified.
Medicines to avoid in camelids due to toxic effects are also clearly highlighted.
THE ALPACA VET Camelid Medicine Dose Calculator Tool
The formulary above provides a dose in mg/kg because there are different formulations available with different concentrations of medicine. In order to help you calculate the dose in millilitres that you will need to administer to your animal, you can use this tool.
For those in the US, there is also a calculator to convert your animal's weight in pounds into a weight in kilograms!
THE ALPACA VET Farm Care Sheet for Owners Description Here
Use this care sheet for any camelid patients that you have at home. It will help you to organise the treatments that are needed, especially if the treatment requirements are complicated so that you don't forget anything. Really useful if you have multiple people looking after your animals as you can clearly see when meds have been given or are still needed. You can use the spaces to remind you to check food, or change water if needed too. Just put a circle at each time point that you want to do something and then initial or tick it off when it's done. When you're finished, just pop the treatment sheet into your animals' file or medicines records.
THE ALPACA VET Quick Reference Guide to Normals Description Here
This is a one page reference guide to normal values in camelids. I include physical examination variables such as heart rate and temperature, as well as biochemistry references ranges and mineral ranges for bloodwork. Have it on hand to help you and your veterinarian interpret bloodwork results.
